Best Motorcycle Dog Carrier

There are two things I love more than anything in the world: my motorcycles, and my dogs. I have two bikes and five dogs, which probably sums up most of who I am. Unfortunately, my paw pals are on the big side so I can’t take them out on my bike. But if you have small dogs and a good motorcycle dog bag, you’d be able to bring your furry friend wherever the road takes you.

In a hurry and need a quick answer?

The absolute best dog carrier out there is the Kuryakan Pet Palace Bag (Amazon). Looking for something more affordable? In that case, you might want to check out the Saddleman Pet Voyager Bag (Amazon).

Do dogs like riding motorcycles?

When it comes to motorcycles, dogs are like people: some like it, others hate it. It varies from dog to dog. Those with bold, strong, and confident personalities will be more likely to take the loud noise and vibrations on a ride. This applies even more to small dog breeds like Chihuahuas or Bichon Frises, who ironically often have big personalities.

In fact, because they’re lapdogs or toy dogs, they’re actually more comfortable being carried around and held. Many larger dog breeds hate being carried around and may find it horrifying and they respond by flailing around to get back on all fours on solid ground. Small dogs frequently feel much more comfortable riding motorcycles than big dogs.

Small dogs are also better suited for being passengers for logistically. They’ll fit in smaller spaces and are easier to lift and manipulate, meaning they won’t mess up the riding dynamics on the bike. While some riders are able to get their large dogs to climb aboard and remain calm, and collected, this is the exception and not the rule.

Is it legal to carry a dog on a motorcycle?

Though riding motorcycles with dogs is amazing, not everybody agrees with me. Some countries, states, or cities put legal restrictions on carrying any sort of animal on a particular vehicle. Some places might require specific equipment or mounting gear to allow for the carrying of pets. Other places may prohibit the activity entirely. Make sure you check with local authorities first. You wouldn’t want your fun furry joyride to end with a ticket.

Are motorcycle pet bags safe?

If possible, you should get a pet carrier that is specifically made for the type of bike you have. Installation could be a problem if you’re not careful. Most pet carriers have universal installation instructions but your bike may not be suitable for pet carriers. Make sure you have lots of attachment points before you start looking for a good bag.

‘Safety’ is a relative term when talking about motorcycles. Nevertheless, if you’re planning to take your dog with you, make sure it is comfortable around the bike. Once you have everything ready to go, try placing your little buddy inside the bag before starting the bike. If it starts getting stressed out once you start the engine, it’s not recommendable to ride.

Take baby steps at first. Ride a couple of meters first, then one street, then around the block, making sure you stop and check every time for any signs of discomfort. It may need some getting used to for the dog to sit or lay down on a moving vehicle, especially if this is its first time.

The dog should be 100% comfortable with the whole ordeal or else it might start freaking out inside the bag while you’re riding. It will turn this supposedly fun and enjoyable experience to an anxiety-inducing horror show.
